Shrinking Migration of Monarch Butterflies

Monarch butterflies are one of the most iconic butterflies in North America and many visitors to our butterfly house spend their time seeking them out. Monarchs are known for their ability to migrate long distances as well as their overall beauty. Sadly, their populations have been in steady decline for the past 20 years. The cause is thought to be a reduction of milkweed along their migration path, limiting the area where the monarchs can lay their eggs. This article in the New York Times gives a good overview of the problem, but is lacking in data. The info-graphic above is a good representation of the decrease in monarch numbers over the years.
