This blog is a supplemental resource for interpreters and presenters with a focus on exhibits and activities at PSC to help us engage with our guests. Heard or read something that you think might be useful at a station or presentation? Been asked a question that you couldn't answer, or given an answer that you think others in SIP might want to use? This is a good place to share it.

MERS in the U.S.
Doing the Virus cart, guests may ask about MERS, the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome. Don't confuse this for MRSA, the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus so-called "superbug."
The reason for the question is likely the recent report that 2 years after being initially identified in Saudi Arabia, the first case of this serious virus was reported in the U.S. after a healthcare worker brought it back from Riyadh to Indiana.
Similar to the SARS virus that was prevalent in China an few years ago. MERS has a 30% mortality rate. At this time, there is no significant progress in developing a vaccine.
