Asteroid and Volcanism Spell Demise for Dinosaurs

Asteroids and Dinosaurs = Destruction (from: http://thetechjournal.com/science/dinosaurs-extinct-nuclear-winter.xhtml)

In case you had missed the latest in Paleontology/Geology news; researchers have found evidence that the extinction of the dinosaurs (and a ton of marine life) was not caused by just a single factor, but was in fact caused by a combination of an asteroid impact and increased volcanism of the Deccan Trapps (current day India) caused by the impact. Researchers were able to measure and date flood volcanism events in the Deccan Plateau, providing a timing and intensity for these events. Through their analyses, they found a strong correlation between the timing of the asteroid impact in the Yucatan Pennisula and an increase in flood basalt volcanism. Though not all scientists are in agreement with this finding, citing that their is no evidence correlating worldwide extinction with the flood volcanism events, rather that the large spread extinction happened in time with the asteroid. All the same, cool news that you should check out!
