While well known for they're cancer resistance, scientists this month recently discovered that Naked Mole Rats can indeed get cancer! Two individuals of the species were found to have different types of cancer that lead the publishers of the study to an issue a cautionary warning around biomedical cancer models based on these animals. But keep in mind, this is just two out of a the whole species, so they may prove to be the exception instead of the norm. Head on over to

A major update to the expected cause of Sea Star Wasting Disease was published
this last week from the Royal Society Publishing group. Researchers have found that the warming waters off the Washington Coast in the Pacific Ocean and Puget Sound areas have a strong correlation to the increase in deaths seen in Ochre Sea Stars from the wasting disease. A copy of the study lives in the SIP office next to Raven's desk in the daily news area. Or take a look at the above link to get a quick overview of the article.
