The Dawn spacecraft is currently approaching Ceres, the largest body in the asteroid belt. Above, is the first image of Ceres that Dawn sent back to Earth. Ceres is a dwarf planet with a layer of ice on its surface likely composed of water ice and minerals such as clay and carbonates. It is also thought that underneath this layer of ice is a liquid water ocean. Once Dawn begins its orbit around Ceres in March of 2015, we should be able to learn much more about this intriguing dwarf-planet. Click here for more information.
